October’s Most Significant Astrology
October 25: Partial solar eclipse in Scorpio conjunct Venus
We’re 22 days into October and what a whirlwind of astrological activity we’ve had so far! Just in the first week of this month alone, Mercury and Pluto stationed direct, Saturn and Uranus came into their most exact square of the year, and the full Moon in Aries took place. That’s a lot of big planetary energy to kick off a new month and it just kept building from there. So, if you have been feeling like time has been compressed or wonky, or there just seems to be a lot happening all at once, either in your own life or in the lives of those you’re close to, know that you are not alone! Many of us are being shown where our growth edges are right now, so remember to be gentle and compassionate with yourself, especially as we head into the most significant astrology of this month beginning next week. This significant astrology is the final eclipse season of 2022, and what an eclipse portal it will be! Let’s get into it.
What is an Eclipse?
There are 2 types of eclipses, solar and lunar.
A solar eclipse is when the Moon moves between the Sun and the Earth. The Sun, Moon, and Earth are aligned in such a way that the Moon blocks various portions of the Sun’s light.
A lunar eclipse is when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon. The Earth, Moon, and Sun are aligned in such a way that Earth’s shadow is cast across the Moon.
Eclipses are linked to the north and south nodes of the Moon, also called the lunar nodes. The lunar nodes are two points where the Moon’s orbit intersects with the Sun’s apparent path around the Earth. When the Sun and Moon conjoin or oppose at the north or south node, there is an eclipse.
What is an Eclipse Season?
An eclipse season refers to an approximate 35-day time period when at least 2 eclipses take place, typically one solar and one lunar. Two eclipse seasons occur in one year. The first eclipse season this year occurred in April and May, and the second eclipse season starts this month and heads into November.
As a note, the newsletters for October and November act as a pair. This month’s newsletter solely focuses on the first eclipse of the season while November’s newsletter will focus on the total lunar eclipse in Taurus on November 8.
The First Eclipse of the Season: A Solar Eclipse in the Sign of the Underworld
On October 25 at 3:50am Pacific Time, a partial solar eclipse in Scorpio will take place. This eclipse will be visible in Europe, western Asia, and northeastern Africa. As a note, even though it will only be visible in these locations, we will still feel the influence of this eclipse no matter where we are in the world.
When a solar eclipse takes place, it always occurs on a new Moon. A new Moon is the invisible part of the lunar cycle, for when a new Moon is in the sky, we can’t see it. However, when the Moon passes in front of the Sun during a solar eclipse, the new Moon becomes visible. Thus, all solar eclipses have an underlying energy of the unconscious (which the Moon represents) becoming conscious (which the Sun represents). So, right off the bat, this partial solar eclipse can usher in a period of time when what was once hidden or buried—secrets, truths, emotions, memories—becomes unveiled.
Solar eclipses (as well as just eclipse seasons in general) initiate rapid change and transformation. Eclipses are also, by nature, unpredictable. So, although there is no way of knowing exactly what may arise for you during an eclipse/eclipse season, taking a look at the sign in which an eclipse occurs and which planet(s) it is in aspect to when it takes place can help to hone in on key themes that the eclipse is ushering in.
This partial solar eclipse takes place in Scorpio. Scorpio is the sign that represents power, death and rebirth, evolution, and the underworld. The underworld is often described as an internal place where we store fear, grief, loss, wounding, anger, etc. Essentially, we usually think of it as a place that houses our more difficult experiences and emotions. While that’s true, it’s important to remember that the underworld can also hold our light, vitality, joy, passion, and creativity. These lighter aspects of self are harder to detect in the shadow because they’re often buried underneath emotions or memories that we’re too afraid to look at.
With that, Scorpio is the sign that willingly digs deep into its own personal underworld in order to unearth, understand, acknowledge, and ultimately heal what is stored there. So, another major teaching of this partial solar eclipse is to face our fears instead of deny, repress, or run away from them because Scorpio knows the reclamation of personal power that comes when we do.
Next, Venus will be in a near exact alignment, or conjunction, with the partial solar eclipse when it takes place. It’s uncommon to have a planet so close to an eclipse when it occurs, so this not only underscores Venus’s importance during this eclipse but the entire eclipse season.
Venus is the Goddess of love, relationships, and harmony. Venus will be in Scorpio along with the eclipse and when she’s in this sign her shadow becomes illuminated. It’s these Venusian shadow characteristics that this partial solar eclipse is encouraging us to let go of. These shadow qualities include people pleasing, not speaking up in order to “keep the peace”, consistently prioritizing other’s needs above your own, not honoring your boundaries, and seeking external approval and validation instead of finding it within.
Finally, this eclipse will be taking place on the south node. The south node represents what we are releasing and letting go of. A solar eclipse on the south node represents liberation. Ultimately, what all of these lessons that this Scorpio partial solar eclipse conjunct Venus are teaching us is that when we do the work to honor, acknowledge, and release old wounds, stories, and experiences of the past we connect with our true, inherent power and freedom in the present.
A Note On Eclipses and the Bending of Time
Eclipses are sometimes referred to as “time benders” because they can act as portals that connect us to 19 years in the past. It’s specifically 19 years because the north and south nodes take 19 years to complete one cycle around the zodiac wheel. This means that the last time the north node was in Taurus and the south node was in Scorpio, which is where they are now, was in 2003.
So, thinking back to where you were and what you were experiencing in 2003 to 2004 may shine a light on similar themes you are processing, working through, and/or healing currently. Also, recognizing just how much you’ve evolved and how far you’ve come since then is a great way to honor the past version of you that got you to where you are today.
In Summary
Eclipses are the most influential new and full Moons of the year that usher in rapid transformation, turning points, and monumental shifts, personally and collectively. So, it’s important to create space in our lives when eclipses take place. Giving ourselves even just a half hour to find stillness and go within can help us be more in flow with the changes that occur at this time rather than in resistance, fear, or force.
Taking It Further
If you are familiar with your birth chart, look to where Scorpio is in your chart, paying close attention to any planets or angles you have in this sign, as this will show you how this eclipse is impacting you. Additionally, since Venus is so prominent during this eclipse/eclipse season, look to see where Taurus and Libra (the 2 signs that Venus rules) are in your chart and if you have any planets or angles in either of these signs as this can offer more in-depth information on what is getting activated for you at this time.
If you are interested in receiving an astrological reading to know how this eclipse season is influencing you personally, I have created a special eclipse mini reading. This reading will only be offered during the month of November. This reading will look at which houses these eclipses take place in for you as well as the planets that they are activating in your chart. This will highlight which areas of your life are poised and ready for change, transformation, and liberation. This reading is 1 hour and is $90.
Please note, in order to book the Eclipse Reading, you will need to have received one of my foundational astrological readings—either the 3 Keys to Your Chart Reading or the Foundational Natal Chart Reading (formally known as the In-Depth Natal Chart Reading).
